Info About Airsoft Handgun Varieties
Find information about airsoft handguns and sidearms and how you can use them as secondary weapons or as main weapons on the airsoft playing field. A lot of airsoft handguns are completely licensed replications of their actual pistol counterparts and look and operate in the same ways while shooting airsoft BBs rather than real bullets.
There are a variety of airsoft handguns including CO2, green gas or propane (blowback and non-blowback), spring powered, and AEG automatic electric gun pistols. Each of these types of sidearms come with positives and negatives connected with them. Learning more about the styles of airsoft pistols allows you to choose which type is right for you and your airsoft game play style.
CO2 Airsoft Pistols
CO2 airsoft handguns are among the most long-lasting and standard kinds of handguns. They are all-weather pistols and operate well in lots of kinds of weather and environments. These pistols use high pressure CO2 gas to shoot airsoft BBs down the gun barrel. The CO2 cartridge stores the gas and is normally held in the handgun’s handle.
These types of airsoft pistols are good for playing airsoft in cold weather since the high pressure CO2 gas is stored in the sealed cylinders and less prone to performance decreases caused by temperature. This gives CO2 airsoft handguns excellent FPS and shot consistency while playing airsoft in the wintertime for instance where other kinds of airsoft guns like green gas cease to function or hardly fire pellets.
Additional Info About CO2 Gas and CO2 Cartridges
CO2 airsoft sidearms are powered by regular 12 gram CO2 cartridge cylinders. These cartridges look similar to a metal cylinder and hold high-pressure CO2 gas composed of 1 carbon atom and a couple of oxygen atoms, as a result the molecular formula comes out to be “C + O2 “. These atoms are attached in the following alignment “O= C =O”. The gas is held in the 12 gram cartridge cylinders under very high pressure of near ~ 800psi that translates to 55bar.
The CO2 gas cartridges cannot be used multiple times and you can typically buy them in packs of 12, 20, 50, or 100 12 gram CO2 cartridge sets. They come sealed to preserve the CO2 gas safely inside, once they are opened (firing them inside of an airsoft pistol breaks the seal) the cartridges will start to lose pressure if they are not expended. You must attempt to run through the entire CO2 cartridge the exact same day you open the seal. If the airsoft matches end and you still have CO2 gas left, use the opportunity to do some pistol target practice and use up the rest of the additional gas. There is no gas level gauge on the cartridge so you have to shoot until the gun stops shooting airsoft BBs.
CO2 cartridges can be stored for a while if they are stored sealed. They have a maker’s best used by date typically noted on the box or cylinder, but they will stay pressurized for a prolonged time past this date if the cartridge seal is not tampered with.
Green Gas Airsoft Sidearm Information
Green gas airsoft pistols are comparable to CO2 handguns, however they do not use CO2 cartridges. The effect on the battlefield and green gas weapon performance is almost the very same as CO2 pistols with the guns shooting up to 300+ FPS.
The propane gas is stashed in the pistol’s airsoft magazine which can frequently hold in-between 15 to 20+ BBs based on the handgun style. A series of valves, rubberized gaskets, and silicone o-rings keep the gas stored in the mag till the handgun’s trigger is pulled.
When bringing a green gas pistol on the airsoft field as a backup or main weapon, bringing extra pistol mags is recommended for rapidly reloading. Having additional magazines on-hand helps you re engage in the action throughout firefights or while clearing structures in CQB (close quarters combat) room-to-room fights.
Green gas handguns are suitable for CQB at airsoft fields given that long guns and full-sized AEGs are usually not permitted to be used for indoor gameplay. This is a safety guideline due to the close quarters distance of airsoft players during shooting engagements and the potential for players to be injured. While green gas handguns still fire airsoft BBs at about 300 FPS, the shorter handgun barrel assists to keep the joules and energy launching the BB at a lower level compared to AEGs, airsoft rifles, sniper rifles, and other long guns.
Thinking About Green Gas Blowback (GBB) VS Green Gas Non-blowback
There are two various styles of green gas airsoft handguns. To begin with there are green gas blowback handguns or GBBs. These handguns work like an authentic handgun with the pistol slide “blowing back” with every shot. The propane causes the slide to cycle every time a brand-new airsoft BB is loaded into the chamber. This functionality is extremely cool, but the handguns typically cost more and potentially have more which can break. The green gas non-blowback airsoft guns have a stationary slide which does not move. The non-blowback pistols normally cost less than GBBs. Performance is about the same between the two varieties of green gas pistols.
About GBB and Green Gas Limitations
While green gas usually works very well, it does have drawbacks. This includes when they are played with throughout the winter airsoft season in the snow or in cold weather (like lower 32 degrees F). Since the green gas or propane gas is stored in the pistol mag using silicone seals and gaskets, cold weather can negatively affect these seals and make the gas to escape before firing the handgun. This can cause the airsoft BBs to only shoot several feet (like 10 feet in cold temps ) when the gun would usually shoot airsoft BBs over 100+ feet in warmer temperatures).
One solution to this problem is to keep the GBB pistol mags warmer by holding them inside your jacket next to your body before game play. This can help to warm up the rubber gaskets and help to seal in the green gas. It may also be worth getting a CO2 variation of your preferred handgun if you actually want to play with a reputable airsoft handgun in the cold. The CO2 cartridges come sealed and these guns shoot better in sub-freezing conditions and while playing in the snow.
Facts About Spring Airsoft Sidearms
Spring airsoft handguns are powered by strong springs with irregular pitches that launch the BBs down the pistol barrel. They are generally single shot. The manual functioning of cocking, shooting, and reloading spring guns makes the weapon’s fire rate much slower than CO2 and GBB handguns. When engaging rivals on the airsoft field with upgraded rifles, auto airsoft AEG SMGs, assault rifles, and CO2 or GBB airsoft pistols, this makes spring airsoft pistols fun to use, however less efficient.
Spring sidearms work best in springer wars where game players can exclusively use related, single shot spring guns or as an alternative weapon for CQB settings when you can often sneak up to other airsoft opponents to get a guaranteed one-shot-one-kill. In the latter situation, a quick 2nd followup shot isn’t called for since the other opponent is now struck and out of the gameplay or headed back to respawn. Be careful when engaging multiple airsoft players considering the gun only shoots as quick as you can re-chamber an airsoft BB manually.
About Spring Handgun Effectiveness
Spring guns are quite useful under the ideal scenarios and airsoft games. Spring guns can generally fire up to 120 feet or farther with 0.12g BBs however the ability to engage targets decreases quickly.
AEG Automatic Electric Airsoft Pistol Facts
AEG airsoft pistols or AEPs (automatic electric pistols) are definitely a viable option to bring as a sidearm on the airsoft field. These automatic electric handguns are commonly powered by mini stick batteries in the gun’s grip. They operate similar to an AEG gun and use pressured air forced through electrically cycled cylinders, pistons, and gearboxes to fire airsoft BBs out of the barrel and rapidly.
AEG handgun magazines usually can hold around 20 to 30 airsoft BBs. The handguns can shoot airsoft BBs up to about 300 FPS using 0.12g airsoft BBs or 200 to 250 FPS with 0.20 gram airsoft BBs.
AEG Handgun Quality and Performance
AEG pistol quality has actually risen substantially over the last few years. The earliest gen guns were a little bit questionable and undependable, however the newer designs have most of the deficiencies worked out and make efficient airsoft backup guns. They can be modded with enhanced mag capacities and by accommodating bigger batteries.
A substantial benefit of carrying an AEG pistol is that you have the ability to rewire the connections to use a larger capacity battery. Depending on the AEG handgun style, you can gain a big output in functionality by adopting a two cell Lipo battery (like an 2S Lipo) as an alternative for the stock battery.
What Airsoft Sidearm is Right for Me?
Selecting the ideal airsoft sidearm for you depends upon your gun budget, how often you want to play airsoft with it, and where you hope to play. If you have at least $100 to invest in your airsoft pistol, look into a green gas blowback handgun or AEG pistol. These guns are usually the top of the line, have great efficiency, and could be a pretty good investment. If you have in-between fifty to one-hundred dollars to spend, have a look at a CO2 handgun or cheaper GBB handgun. These mid-tier guns will still finish the job and will be resilient sidearms. If you have less than $50, consider a cheap CO2 or springer handgun. You can still buy a resilient airsoft pistol to use for the pistol airsoft guns.
