How to Choose an Airsoft Pistol
Learn more about airsoft pistols and sidearms and how you can use them as backup weapons or as main weapons on the airsoft playing field. Practicing your shot accuracy and getting the best pistol can make a big difference in aiming your shots. Sidearms, by nature, are reduced range airsoft guns. They are often fashioned after authentic sidearms or clones of real pistols. A large number of airsoft handguns are fully licensed editions of their actual firearm equivalents. These airsoft guns can look and run in the same ways identically to the real guns they are designed around while firing airsoft BBs rather than actual bullets.
There are a number of varieties of airsoft sidearms such as CO2, green gas (blowback and non-blowback), spring powered, and AEG automatic electric gun pistols. Each of these varieties of pistols have positives and negatives associated with them. Learning more about the kinds of airsoft handguns helps you choose which type is right for you and your airsoft game play style.
CO2 Airsoft Pistol Details
CO2 airsoft handguns are one of the most durable and standard styles of pistols. They are all-weather guns working well in many kinds of varying temperatures, weather and climates. These handguns use high pressure CO2 gas to launch airsoft BBs down the weapon barrel. The CO2 cartridge stores the gas within a cylinder and is typically housed in the pistol’s magazine in the handle.
These styles of airsoft weapons are good choices for playing airsoft in cold weather conditions due to the fact that the compressed CO2 gas is stored in the sealed cylinders and less vulnerable to performance decreases by low temperatures. This gives CO2 airsoft handguns excellent FPS and shot consistency while playing airsoft in the cold for example where other sorts of guns like green gas stuffer from low performance or barely fire airsoft BBs.
Information About CO2 Gas and CO2 Cartridges
CO2 airsoft sidearms are powered by standard 12 gram CO2 cartridge cylinders. These cartridges look similar to a shiny steel cylinder and contain high pressure CO2 gas comprised of 1 carbon atom and 2 oxygen atoms, hence the molecular formula comes out to be “C + O2 “. These atoms are attached in the following sequence “O= C =O”. The gas is stored in the 12 gram cartridges under extremely high pressure of approximately ~ 800psi that converts to 55bar.
They come sealed to keep the CO2 gas securely inside, however when they are opened (firing them in an airsoft weapon breaks the seal) they will start to lose pressure if they are left unused. If the airsoft games end and you still have CO2 gas left, use the opportunity to do some pistol target practice and use up the rest of the extra gas.
CO2 cartridges have a long storage life if they are kept sealed. They come with the manufacturer’s use by date normally noted on the box or cartridge, however, they will probably maintain pressure for a prolonged time past this date if the cartridge seal is not damaged.
Green Gas Airsoft Sidearms
Green gas airsoft handguns are similar to CO2 handguns, however they use propane gas instead of CO2 cartridges. The result on the battlefield and green gas weapon efficiency is virtually the same as CO2 handguns with the guns at around 300+ FPS.
The green gas is kept in the pistol’s airsoft mag which can commonly hold around 15 to 20+ airsoft BBs based on the handgun type. A series of valves, rubber gaskets, and silicone o-rings keep the gas stored in the magazine up until the pistol’s trigger is squeezed.
When playing with a green gas pistol on the airsoft field or arena as a secondary or main weapon, additional mags are suggested for rapidly reloading and engaging opponents. Having additional mags helps you get back in the action throughout firefights or while clearing buildings in CQB (close quarters combat) room-to-room combat.
Green gas handguns are excellent for CQB at airsoft fields because long guns and full-sized AEGs are typically not approved to be used during indoor engagements. This is an essential safety rule because of the close quarters proximity of players during the shooting engagements and potential for players to get hurt. While green gas pistols still fire airsoft BBs at around 300 FPS, the shorter handgun barrel assists to keep the joules and energy sending the BB at a lower level compared to AEGs, airsoft rifles, sniper rifles, and other long guns.
Thinking About Green Gas Blowback (GBB) VS Green Gas Non-blowback
There are 2 various types of green gas airsoft handguns. First there are green gas blowback handguns or GBBs. These pistols run like an actual pistol with the pistol slide “blowing back” with every shot. When a new airsoft BB is loaded into the chamber, the gas triggers the slide to cycle. The result is really cool, however the pistols often cost more and potentially have more to break. The green gas non-blowback airsoft handguns have a stationary slide which does not move. The non-blowback handguns generally cost less than GBBs. Efficiency is about the same when comparing the two types of green gas handguns.
About GBB and Green Gas Limitations
Due to the fact that the green gas or propane gas is held in the magazine by rubber seals, o-rings, and gaskets, the cold can influence these gaskets and cause the gas to escape prior to shooting. This can cause the airsoft BBs to simply land a couple of feet (like 10 feet in cold temps ) when it would usually shoot BBs over 100+ foot distances in warmer weather conditions).
One strategy to this problem is to keep the GBB pistol mags warmer by placing them next to your body or near a heat source prior to game play starts. If you truly want to play with a dependable airsoft handgun in the cold weather, it might also be worth getting a CO2 version of your favorite pistol.
Spring Airsoft Sidearms
Spring airsoft guns are powered by strong springs with irregular pitches that fire the BBs out of the handgun barrel. The manual functioning of cocking, reloading, and shooting spring pistols makes the fire rate much slower than CO2 and GBB handguns.
Spring handguns perform most effectively in springer battles where players can exclusively use similar, single shot spring pistols or as a transition weapon for CQB environments when you can frequently sneak up to other airsoft opponents to get an assured one-shot-one-kill. In the latter scenario, a quick 2nd follow-up shot will not be needed considering that the other player is now hit by the first BB and out of the gameplay or headed back to respawn. When engaging several adversaries considering that the gun just shoots as quickly as you can re-chamber an airsoft BB manually, be careful.
About Spring Pistol Performance
Spring handguns are incredibly useful under the appropriate circumstances and airsoft games. Their FPS typically chronos at around 250 FPS to 300 FPS with lighter 0.12 gram airsoft BBs. These weapons normally fire the lighter weight airsoft BBs due to the fact that the coiled springs are less powerful than other kinds of airsoft guns like rifles. Spring guns can typically shoot up to 120 feet or more with 0.12g BBs however the ability to engage targets accurately decreases quickly. Using basic 0.20g weight airsoft BBs, you will very likely have a reduced shooting distance of around 60 to 80 feet or less with heightened precision.
AEG Automatic Electric Airsoft Handgun Facts
AEG airsoft pistols or AEPs (automatic electric pistols) are also a good choice to bring as a backup gun on the airsoft field. These automatic electric handguns are commonly powered by mini stick batteries in the pistol’s butt. They operate just like an AEG rifle and use forced air pumped through electrically cycled pistons, gearboxes, and cylinders to shoot airsoft BBs quickly and rapidly.
AEG pistol mags normally can hold about 20 to 30 airsoft BBs. The handguns can fire airsoft BBs up to around 300 FPS with 0.12 gram airsoft BBs or 200 to 250 FPS with 0.20g airsoft BBs.
AEG Handgun Quality and Performance
AEG handgun quality has increased significantly recently. The initial gen guns were a bit undependable and sketchy, however the newer models have the deficiencies resolved and make effective airsoft secondary guns. They can be improved with enhanced mag storage capacities as well as accommodating more powerful batteries.
A big benefit of buying an AEG handgun is that you have the ability to rewire the adapters to use a more substantial battery. Depending upon the AEG handgun model, you are able to get a big leap in performance and fire rate utilizing a two cell Lipo battery (like an 2S Lipo) as a replacement for the stock mini battery. Take extra precautions when tweaking the components and wires since you should take into consideration the voltages, mAh, and loads of the batteries. If you have modding concerns, ask a qualified weapon service tech at your nearest airsoft shop or store.
Which Airsoft Sidearm is Best for Me to Buy?
If you have over one-hundred dollars to spend on your airsoft pistol, evaluate a GBB handgun or automatic electric pistol. If you have around fifty to one-hundred dollars to shell out, check out a CO2 pistol or more affordable GBB handgun. You can still play with a resilient airsoft pistol by checking out cheaper pistols and by trading with players selling used airsoft guns if you need to save money.
