The NC 3-12×56 and NC 5-20×56 are daytime riflescopes, both of which feature variable magnification and are designed for use on a variety of weapon platforms. Both riflescopes feature a MilDot reticle positioned in the second focal plane of the eyepiece, ensuring permanent sizing of the reticle regardless of the variable magnification setting being utilized. The reticles are LED-lit with 7 adjustable brightness levels to choose from.Ideal for acquiring small targets at long distances, the riflescope is equipped with a central system parallax adjustment, effective for ranges of 50 meters to infinity. Both riflescopes incorporate windage adjustment (the multi-revolving scheme) and elevation adjustment (single-revolving scheme). Both units have tactile/audible step adjustments.

What You Need to Know About Glass

Rifle scopes allow you to specifically align a rifle at various targets by lining up your eye with the target over a distance. They accomplish this through magnification using a set of lenses within the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adjusted for the consideration of various ecological aspects like wind and elevation increases or decreases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to understand exactly where the bullet will land based upon the sight picture you are viewing through the optic as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. The majority of contemporary rifle scopes and optics have about 11 parts which are located internally and outside of the optic. These scope parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage dials or turrets, focus rings, and other components. Learn about the eleven parts of scopes.

Rifle Glass Varieties

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Deciding on the best type of rifle optic is based on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Scope Facts

First focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle ahead of the magnifying lens. This triggers the reticle to increase in size based upon the level of zoom being used. The outcome is that the reticle measurements are the same at the magnified distance as they are at the non amplified range. As an example, one tick on a mil-dot reticle at 100 yards without having “zoom” is still the corresponding tick at one hundred yards using 5x “zoom”. These types of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance types of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where calculations are minimal
  • Experienced shooters who have an idea for their target “hold over” plus “lead” correlations for their weapon
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is enlarged and uses up more visual eyesight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Glass Info

Second focal plane optics (SFP) include the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. This induces the reticle to remain at the same overall size in relation to the quantity of magnification being used. The outcome is that the reticle measurements change based upon the zoom employed to shoot over lengthier distances considering that the reticle markings present different increments which fluctuate with the magnification level. In the FFP illustration with the SFP optic, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick. These particular sorts of glass work for:

  • Far away types of shooting where shooters have more time to make ballistic calculations
  • Shooting where most shots take place within much shorter proximities and ranges
  • Shooters who desire a clearer optic picture without area taken up by the bigger FFP reticle

Optic Zoom

The extent of scope zoom you need on your scope is based on the type of shooting you like to do. Practically every kind of rifle scope gives some degree of zoom. The level of magnification a scope supplies is established by the diameter, density, and curvatures of the lens glass within the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the glass. This indicates what the shooter is looking at through the scope is amplified times the power factor of what can normally be seen by human eyes.

Fixed Power Lens Rifle Scope Details

A single power rifle optic or scope comes with a magnification number designator like 4×32. This means the zoom power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this type of scope can not adjust since it is fixed.

Variable Power Lens Glass

Variable power rifle scopes can be modified between magnified levels. The power adjustment is accomplished using the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

The Power and Range of Optics

Here are some suggested scope power levels and the ranges where they could be effectively used. Always remember that higher power glass will not be as efficient as lower magnification level glass because too much zoom can be a bad thing. The very same idea goes for longer distances where the shooter needs to have increased power to see where to best aim the rifle at the target.

Info on Lens Coatings

All state-of-the-art rifle glass lenses are coated. Lens finishing can be an essential element of a rifle’s setup when looking at high end rifle optics and scope systems.

Info on Rifle Glass Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some scope makers also use “HD” or high-definition lens finishings which use various procedures, elements, chemicals, and polarizations to draw out different colors and viewable definition through the lens. Some scope makers use “HD” to refer to “ED” indicating extra-low dispersion glass.

About Single Finishing Versus Multi-Coating

Different optic lenses can also have different coverings used to them. All lenses generally have at least some type of treatment or finish applied to them before they are used in a rifle scope or optic.

Single coated lenses have a treatment applied to them which is generally a protective and enhancing multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can preserve the lens from scratches while reducing glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single coated lens depends upon the scope producer and just how much you spent on it. The scope’s maker and cost are indicators of the lens quality.

Some scope makers also make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” coated. Being “better” depends on the maker’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in developing the rifle scope.

Anti-water Finish for Rifle Optics

Water on a lens does not help with preserving a clear sight picture through a scope in any way. Many top of the line and high-end scope makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic finish. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this type of treatment. It provides protection for the exterior of the Steiner optic lens so the H2O molecules can not bind to it or create surface tension. The result is that the water beads move off of the scope to preserve a clear, water free sight picture.

Alternatives for Mounting Glass on Long Guns

Mounting solutions for scopes can be found in a couple of choices. There are the basic scope rings which are separately mounted to the scope and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various kinds of mounts also usually can be found in quick release variations which use toss levers which allow rifle shooters to quickly install and remove the optics.

Scope Mounts with Hex Key Rings

Basic, clamp-on type mounting optic rings use hex head screws to install to the flattop style Picatinny scope mounting rails on rifles. These styles of scope mounts use a pair of independent rings to support the scope, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are designed for far away precision shooting. This type of scope mount is excellent for rifles which are in need of a durable, rock solid mount which will not move regardless of how much the scope is moved about or jarring the rifle takes. These are the style of mounts you should get for a devoted scope system on a reach out and touch someone scouting or hard target interdiction firearm that will almost never need to be altered or adjusted. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can additionally be used on the screws to protect against the hex screws from wiggling out after they are mounted tightly in place. An example of these rings are the 30mm style made by the Vortex Optics brand. The set usually costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Scope Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly detach a scope and attach it to a different rifle. Several scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a compatible design mount. These types of mounts come in handy for long guns which are transferred a lot, to swap out the optic from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are used between multiple rifles or are situationally focused.

Sealing and Gas Purging for Rifle Glass Tubes

Moisture inside your rifle scope can destroy a day of shooting and your costly optic by causing fogging and creating residue inside of the scope tube. Most scopes avoid wetness from going into the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant.

Rifle Scope Gas Purging

Another part of avoiding the buildup of wetness within the rifle scope’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this space is already occupied by the gas, the glass is less impacted by condition alterations and pressure distinctions from the outdoor environment which could potentially allow water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to seek out.
