Glass Info

Rifle scopes allow you to specifically aim a rifle at various targets by aligning your eye with the target over a range. They do this through zoom by employing a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adjusted for consideration of separate natural elements like wind and elevation to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to help shooters understand exactly where the bullet will hit based on the sight picture you are seeing through the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended point of impact. Most contemporary rifle optics have about eleven parts which are located within and externally on the optic. These optic pieces include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, elevation turrets, objective focus rings, and other parts. Learn about the eleven parts of rifle glass.

The Styles of Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Opting for the perfect type of rifle optic is based on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

Info About First Focal Plane Scopes

Focal plane scopes (FFP) come with the reticle in front of the zoom lens. This causes the reticle to increase in size based upon the level of magnification being used. The outcome is that the reticle measurements are the same at the amplified distance as they are at the non amplified range. One tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards with no “zoom” is still the exact same tick at 100 yards with 5x “zoom”. These kinds of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance types of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where estimations are very little
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their aim point “hold over” and also “lead” correlations for their long guns
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is bigger and occupies more visual eyesight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Glass Info

Second focal plane optics (SFP) include the reticle behind the magnifying lens. This induces the reticle to remain at the exact same dimensions in relation to the quantity of zoom being used. The end result is that the reticle measurements adjust based on the magnification applied to shoot over lengthier distances considering the markings present various increments which can vary with the zoom level. In the FFP illustration with the SFP optic, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement. These particular types of scopes work for:

  • Far away styles of shooting where shooters have additional time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most shots happen within much shorter proximities and ranges
  • Shooters who prefer a clearer optic sight picture with less area taken up by the bigger FFP reticle

Magnification for Scopes

The quantity of magnification a scope provides is figured out by the size, thickness, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Single Power Lens Scopes

A single power rifle scope uses a magnification number designator like 4×32. This suggests the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this kind of scope can not adjust considering that it is fixed.

Variable Power Lens Rifle Glass

Variable power rifle scopes have adjustable power. These types of scopes will list the zoom level in a format such as 2-10×32. These numbers suggest the magnification of the scope can be adjusted in between 2x and 10x power. This additionally utilizes the power levels in-between 2 and 10. The power modification is achieved by making use of the power ring component of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

The Power and Range Correlation of Scopes

Here are some suggested scope power settings and the ranges where they may be effectively used. High power scopes will not be as effective as lower magnification scopes due to the fact that too much magnification can be a bad thing. The exact same concept relates to longer distances where the shooter needs to have sufficient power to see where to best aim the rifle.

Details on Lens Finish

All contemporary rifle optic lenses are coated. There are various types and qualities of glass coverings. Lens finishing is a crucial aspect of a rifle’s setup when looking at high end rifle optics and scope units. The glass lenses are one of the most vital parts of the optic as they are what your eye looks through while sighting a rifle in on the point of impact. The coating on the lenses safeguards the lens exterior as well as assists with anti glare from refracted sunrays and color presence.

HD Versus ED Rifle Scope Lens Coatings

Some scope brands also use “HD” or high-definition lens coatings which use different methods, elements, chemicals, and polarizations to draw out a wide range of colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope makers use “HD” to refer to “ED” implying extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Coating Versus Multi-Coating

Different optic lenses can also have various finishes applied to them. All lenses normally have at least some type of treatment or covering used to them before they are used in a rifle scope or optic.

This lens treatment can protect the lens from scratches while decreasing glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single coated lens depends on the scope producer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope makers similarly make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” covered. Being “much better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of materials used in constructing the rifle scope.

Anti-water Finishing for Optics

Water on an optical lens doesn’t help with maintaining a clear sight picture through an optic whatsoever. Numerous top of the line or high-end scope makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic finish. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this kind of treatment. It provides protection for the surface area of the Steiner optic lens so the H2O particles can not bind to it or produce surface tension. The result is that the water beads sheet off of the scope to keep a clear, water free sight picture.

Rifle Scope Installing Options

Installing solutions for scopes come in a couple of choices. There are the standard scope rings which are individually installed to the scope and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various kinds of mounts also generally are made in quick release versions which use throw levers which enable rifle operators to rapidly install and dismount the scope.

Hex Key Scope Rings

Normal, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use two separate rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which is created for long distance accuracy shooting. This type of scope install is excellent for rifles which require a long lasting, sound mounting solution which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Scope Mounting Solutions with Quick-Release Cantilever Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly remove a scope and connect it to a different rifle. Numerous scopes can even be swapped out if they all use a similar design mount. These types of mounts come in handy for rifles which are carried a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protecting the scope, or for optics which are used between numerous rifles.

Info on Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle glass can mess up a day of shooting and your costly optic by inducing fogging and generating residue inside of the scope’s tube. Most optics prevent humidity from entering the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof. Usually, these water resistant scopes can be immersed within 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be ample humidity avoidance for basic use rifles for hunting and sporting purposes, unless you anticipate taking your rifle aboard a watercraft and are worried about the scope still working if it goes overboard and you can still rescue the gun.

Gas Purged Rifle Glass Tubes

Another part of avoiding the accumulation of wetness inside of the rifle optic’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Given that this area is currently taken up by the gas, the glass is less affected by temp alterations and pressure distinctions from the outdoor environment which might possibly permit water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to look for.
