Info Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes allow you to precisely align a rifle at various targets by lining up your eye with the target at range. They do this through zoom by using a series of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s alignment can be dialed in to account for various ecological elements like wind speed and elevation increases or decreases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to help the shooter understand precisely where the bullet will hit based upon the sight picture you are viewing via the scope as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. The majority of modern rifle scopes and optics have about eleven parts which are located inside and externally on the scope body. These parts consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, adjustment dials or turrets, focus rings, and other components. See all eleven parts of an optic.

Rifle Glass Types

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Choosing the optimal type of rifle scope is based on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

Info About First Focal Plane Optics

Focal plane scopes (FFP) include the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These styles of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance types of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where estimations are marginal
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their aim point “hold over” and also “lead” relationships for their firearms
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is enlarged and takes up more visual sight space than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Glass

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) come with the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick measurement.

  • Far away styles of shooting where shooters have more time to make ballistic calculations
  • Shooting where most shots take place within much shorter proximities and ranges
  • Shooters who select a clearer optic picture with less room taken up by the larger sized FFP reticle

Rifle Scope Zoom

The amount of scope magnification you need on your glass depends upon the kind of shooting you plan to do. Virtually every type of rifle optic provides some amount of magnification. The volume of magnification a scope offers is identified by the diameter, thickness, and curves of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the optic is the “power” of the opic. This indicates what the shooter is aiming at through the scope is amplified times the power aspect of what can usually be seen by human eyes.

About Single Power Lens Rifle Optics

A single power rifle scope or optic will have a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the magnification power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this kind of scope can not change since it is set from the factory.

About Variable Power Lens Scopes

Variable power rifle scopes use enhanced power. The power adjustment is performed by using the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

The Power and Range Correlation of Rifle Scopes

Here are some advised scope powers and the ranges where they can be successfully used. Bear in mind that high power optics and scopes will not be as effective as lower magnification level glass since increased magnification can be a bad thing. The same applies to extended ranges where the shooter needs increased power to see precisely where to best aim the rifle at the target.

Scope Lens Coating

All contemporary rifle optic lenses are layered. There are various types and qualities of glass coatings. Lens finish can be an essential aspect of a rifle when thinking of luxury rifle optics and targeting systems. The lenses are among the most critical components of the scope considering that they are what your eye sees through while sighting a rifle in on the target. The finish on the lenses safeguards the lens surface area and assists with anti glare capabilities from refracted sunlight and color perception.

Details on Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some scope manufacturers also use “HD” or high-definition lens finishes which use different methods, chemicals, polarizations, and components to draw out separate colors and viewable definition through the lens. Some scope producers use “HD” to refer to “ED” implying extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Rifle Optic Lens Finish Versus Multi-Coating

Different scope lenses can even have various coatings applied to them. All lenses usually have at least some kind of treatment or finish applied to them before they are used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. Since the lens isn’t simply a raw piece of glass, they require performance enhancing coatings. It is part of the finely tuned optic. It needs to have a covering applied to it so that the lens will be optimally functional in many types of environments, degrees of sunlight (full VS shaded), and other shooting conditions.

Single layered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is typically a protective and boosting multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can shield the lens from scratches while lowering glare and other less advantageous things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single covered lens depends upon the scope designer and how much money you paid for it. Both are signs of the lens quality.

Some scope manufacturers also make it a point to define if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” covered. Being “better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of products used in building the rifle scope.

Anti-water Covering for Rifle Scopes

Water on a lens doesn’t help with preserving a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Many top of the line and high-end optic companies will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic finishing.

Optic Installing Alternatives

Mounting solutions for scopes come in a few choices. There are the basic scope rings which are individually installed to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various kinds of mounts also usually come in quick release versions which use manual levers which permit rifle operators to rapidly mount and remove the optics.

Glass Mounts with Hex Key Rings

Standard, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of different rings to support the optic, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are designed for long distance precision shooting. This type of scope install is fine for rifles which require a resilient, sound mounting solution which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Quick-Release Cantilever Rifle Glass Ring Mounting Solutions

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly detach a scope and attach it to a different rifle. Numerous scopes can even be swapped out if they all use a compatible design mount. These types of mounts are handy for rifles which are carried a lot, to swap out the optic from the rifle for protection, or for scopes which are used between multiple rifles.

Sealing and Gas Purging for Scope Tubes

Moisture inside your rifle scope can spoil a day of shooting and your pricey optic by triggering fogging and developing residue within the scope tube. Most scopes prevent moisture from going into the optical tube with a series of sealing O-rings which are waterproof. Normally, these optics can be immersed underneath 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be sufficient moisture content prevention for conventional use rifles, unless you plan on taking your rifle on a boat and are concerned about the optic still working if it is submerged in water and you can still salvage the firearm.

Scope Gas Purging

Another element of preventing the buildup of moisture inside of the rifle optic’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Considering that this area is already occupied by the gas, the optic is less influenced by temperature level changes and pressure variations from the outside environment which might potentially enable water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to seek out.
